days are boring... we are being made to cover up any distracting text on our walls with brown paper... i sliced my finger open, my bass playing days may be at an end...
things are afoot... josephine are 'signing' with a US indie for very small release, and it's great!! more to follow... MTO are playing with a female ramones tribute band in the cathouse on may 13th... we are being played lots on a podcast, and apparently people are loving it... which is nice... mark got his drumkit! it's silver, sparkly and very cool, but needs tuned... i will be fixing this this week then we can REALLY annoy the neighbours... speaking of which i am getting fed up with the wankers upstairs... they started shouting at us again at 1.30pm on saturday for playing music!!! then the idiot wife yelled 'stupid bitch' down the stairs at me... i think i came out rather well when i retorted in my best condescending teacher's voice "Oh, don't be so crude!"... but am preparing myself for a war...i'm sure they have no case here, i mean if it's during the day, it's just something they have to put up with... but i shall be phoning citizens' advice to check...
right, i'm bleeding on the keyboard, must go...

3:57 pm - work out
|
i'm fed up with all this work nonsense. today i've hardly done anything. i wrote a prelim, which i better go photocopy, and that's about it. internet was down till about an hour ago, which was a disaster! i needed to know the phone number for alton towers booking line and couldn't get it! it seems to have fallen to me to be in charge of the English department's annual AT trip, which is fun, but this year apparently we're leaving between midnight and 2am, which is all good cos you get more time on the rides, but also means like no sleep before... and poor mark is being dragged again (although at least it's a free day in alton towers, and you don't really see the kids at all) good weekend. friday was very cool but very odd. it was the get a room night at the brunswick hotel. our set went really well, so did mark's, and everyone was having a great time. but i've never been to a more pretentious place in my life! very (and i know i'm about to offend some people) west end... saturday was also cool, went into town, ate some nice food in bloc, then my friend lois came through. haven't seen her in about a year cos she's been in israel on a kibutz (feeding lambs!) but she was on fine form... going to head through to dunfy this friday to see her again cos she's bored and missing all her new friends. then sat night FMM supported motormark and mates of state. thought it was good, maybe all a little too quiet though. and FMM went down well so that was cool. mark is on the radio tonight! the live session for Air. josephine did it a few years ago, it's fun... so i'm going to record it for him... miss the occupier are playing again this saturday, 13th note. we wrote a great new song, might play it, not sure... i need a new outfit i think though, or maybe some new accessories... anyway nothing else is new. mark lost his bonus at work, which sux, and he lost it cos he was ill and had to go home. apparently if he'd just worked another hour that'd have been ok... but of course they didn't tell him this... bastards... :|

well, i can fnially breathe again. the. folios. are. in. i'm going to type that again the folios are in!!!!! all of them!!!!! no one but an english teacher can conceive the amazing heavenly echo of those words bouncing around in my head... ah, i am free for another year!! so today i have taught NOTHING, and am letting my 3rd years watch donnie darko. and i am going to go home after this!
i have a photo shoot tonight with josephine, so i need an outfit... i'm thinking green and denim, not sure why. never used to like green but it's all the rage in flat 2/1 these days... well, actually mark has no green stuff... so i'm talking about myself as usual!
had a great weekend... friday went to see le tigre. unfortunately i was ill and spent the hour before i left crying because i felt so shit and had no clothes to wear. poor mark tried to find me a suitable outfit but i was having none of it! but i downed some vodka and felt better and watched the show and felt much better! went down to barfly and caught up with mark, had a smirnoff ice and we went home on a bus (cheaper than my £9 taxi to the west end earlier) saturday... took a smelly megabus to aberdeen. went to drummonds and met up with christopher, daniel, marion and gordon. went to a chinese restaurant in a shopping centre for dinner - trust aberdeen to have seats available for 8 people at a moment's notice on a saturday night! lovely food, then the erroneous half bottle of wine and sambuca/tequila/tabasco shot... after that the evening was much more fun, and even when the bass amp cut out leaving magnus playing alone i found this all rather funny... haven't watched the video yet, might put the sound off when i do! but all positive feedback as usual... sunday... got back and matchsticks weren't using the practice after all so me and mark went down, played some rawk! magnus turned up and we did some le tigre covers.. all good...
tonight mark is playing with the ducks at sleazys so i get to watch him playing drums, yay!
then tomorrow i have to go to the hospital so no school! thursday i'm doing a sponsored walk with the kids.... then i'm on holiday! for two weeks!!
i'm smiling now... ooh, and i found out today i'm getting to go to the history trip next june to greece! we get to go to the olympic games! cool!
:)

We played King Tut's last night, and it was a great gig, packed (cos of the free tickets i imagine) and very eclectic. we even made money, so some people (quite a few people) must've paid to get in... so that's T in the Park stuff over I suppose, and was it worth playing? yeah, but no amazing record deals have landed in our greedy paws... think i'm gonna enter t break this year with miss the occupier (cos i don't think josephine can play two years in a row, and would we want to? wouldn't it be like saying yeah we'vce gone no further forward in a year... which we haven't, but hey!) i have the mother of all piles of marking to do and i don't think i can cope. i should, of course, be doing that right now instead of typing, and be doing that tonight instead of going to record, and be doing that tomorrow night instead of going out with my mate matthew to celebrate his engagement, and be doing that on saturday instead of going furniture shopping with my mum, and be doing that on saturday night instead of going to falkirk to see aileen and get drunk, AND be doing that on sunday instead of nursing a hangover and going to practice... oh... dear... i think i see a problem with my chosen career and conflicting lifestyle...
ok, so i better finish marking the higher personal essays... actually they've been very interesting - just found out that one of the boys is going to be a father in the summer! gossip!!
oh, i probably won't update b4 next week, so shameless plug!!

OK, very short post cos i'm supposed to be marking essays... i'm off for a long weekend as of 3.45pm today but am not going to get to enjoy it cos i'm going on a trip tomorrow at 8.30am to Ayr and Dumfries with 30 S3 pupils... why? cos it may be my only way into the New York trip that runs... ah, devious... but the good thing is mark is coming too, and as it was his birthday yesterday and this is therefore his birthday (and valentine's day) weekend so it will be nice not to be apart! also had to miss his gig last night (which went well i hear) cos i had much work to do... i hate this time of year... who'd be an english teacher...
come to the gig on wednesday!

1:39 pm - everything is tasteless
|
i have a rubbish cold. i was off work yesterday cos of it and i am back today but still feel like shit. i have no idea what i'm teaching cos my brain won't let me think. waaaah!
weekend was of varying degrees. friday i went to aileen's and played dvd trivial persuit. i was worried about looking thick (i have no general knowledge, especially after much cocktails) but it was the popular version, which i have found i am very good at! it appears i know an awful lot about tv programmes and gossip... but i drank a gallon of pina colada (freshly made by aileen!) then another gallon of my own creation, cherry b beautiful (cherry b, vodka, cranberry juice, white rum and lemonade) then my head went funny and i had to sleep.
saturday was quiet. mark had the cold that i now have so we stayed in. i think we watched a film ,but i can't remember. we've been watching so many recently - saw the bourne supremacy over two nights cos we both fell asleep half way through on monday night. that doesn't reflect how bad it is, we were just tired! it's pretty good, though if you didn't like the first one you wouldn't like this one cos it's just the same but cooler.
josephine are playing 4th feb in drummonds. nice to get back up the road. we're writing like crazy and hoping the album will be out in july, but who knows....

well mark's gig on saturday was ace and they sold lots of albums so i'm expecting them to be signed by thursday... let's hope anyway... saw x-vectors in stereo on friday, they were great, i reccommend them to everyone! i was drunk a lot this weekend, which is fine, but i spent all my money... aileen came over and we had much vodka and it was fun! think she enjoyed matchsticks, not her sort of thing usually but she thought they looked v cool esp becky and mark (of course!). now waiting for mark to come back from praccy - well, i'm going to pick him up... how come i got roped into that??!! (he's not done till midnight, yawn!) school is fine, showed a great documentary on philip larkin to the 5th years today. ended with larkin and monica getting absolutely sloshed every day of their later lives, monica drinking a bottle of gin for breakfast - seriously - and they played a recording of the two of them pissed as farts singing fascist racist songs! slightly off putting! one of the boys decided that after discovering larkin's right-wing crypto-fascist leanings he 'deserved' to die of throat cancer... hmm... but i am rediscovering how amazing his poetry is and nearly bought his first novel today ('jill') but bought martin amis' 'dead babies' instead... only cos he was on the documentary too (kingsley and larkin were big pals) and i thought it was about time i read some martin amis... ok i go... more tunes to load onto the ipod... :)

3:06 pm - New Year New You?
|
Haven't updated for an age so this will not be very comprehensive... Mark and I had a great christmas together, our first! so nice to be with him all the time. we went to my folks for christmas day then up to mallaig for a few days the following week. met his sister angela, who is lovely, and saw bernie and the girls again, which was cool. mallaig was stunning, but v cold and windy and rainy. and there were random drunk men in pubs with unusually large hands... then me mark and seamus drove back down the road and had NY in glasgow at sleazys, which was ace and very drunken, culminating in spending a few hours in faheem's with his holiday video and a game he invented which involved me or magnus or minty pretending to phone him and ask if we could go to *insert random country*, and then him pretending to check and saying 'no, that's all booked up' every time - except when he called himself, then he could go anywhere he wanted... yeah... lots...
so i'm back at school.
had a gig last night in barfly which was surprisingly busy considering it's early january. played with wide awake (who were ok, but a little boring), magdalena (who i think had a bad sound and could have been better, but looked cool) and kai-axa, who SUCKED and i don't mind saying so... we were the best!! some norwegian girls thought we were great... so mark managed to persuade them to come to see FMM on saturday... we'll see who they think's better then!! they had really strange accents, a cross between 'european', brummy, scottish and cockney... too weird so we went home and mark accidentally covered me in cold tea, up to my pants... make of that what you will!
then today magnus txtd early saying x-vectors wanted us to support them tomorrow night in stereo, and i was all pleased cos they're really cool, but now apparently it's too late, so i don't know if that means he has replied to late or they have had to cancel the gig... but if they're playing, i'm going!
enuff
:)
ooh, i got a mini ipod for xmas from my baby!

is the acest radio show ever... probably... actually, i don't think 'acest' is a word, but never mind... so nick cave was utterly amazing on friday last week... first half was all new album(s) with a four piece gosepl choir backing, then second half was a greatest hits tour de force... they played deanna! and red right hand!! and the weeping song!!! and stagger lee!!!!!! no blixa, but it was cool all the same... i'm waiting for my media class to come in. i should probably be finding the right place on the tape so we can all watch hollyoaks together... no i'm not kidding... things are considerably quieter on the gig front. nothing till 19th november with josephine (sleazys) then 3rd december (josephine, dunfermline) then 4th december (miss the occupier, aberdeen)... and that's all we've booked... how boring... would like to be playing closer to xmas, did that last year, 23rd in aberdeen, very festive... mark's well, been the top salesman at his shitty job for the last two weeks! he rocks at selling old women british gas! yay! so money isn't too bad, and maybe our trip to london will not cripple us financially after all! anyway, better go find that tape...

so josephine were in aberdeen over the weekend at Exile Studios recording four new tracks for the next album... they turned out really great and we're kinda excited! it's great to be back writing stuff and hearing what a musical shift there's been between the two albums... course it's been two years... one noticible (improvement?) has been that we can't seem to write a song over 2mins30secs now... which is ok if you like short songs but it means we'll need about 40 for an album! now it's gonna be Miss The Occupier's turn... actually really excited about that cos it should turn out really great. talking about being excited, NICK CAVE IS ON FRIDAY!!!!!!!!! i can't wait!!! saw him a few years back at the barrowlands and he was immense, so what with the genius of the new albums he should be even better... yay yay yay!!!
better go do some marking...

i'm supposed to be working. there are two egyptian teachers in the room who i am ignoring. that's good PR... hmm... thought i'd type some journal stuff. i have a mad rash. it's annoying. it's been there for nearly two weeks and is causing all sorts of clothing issues. it's not itchy but rather unsightly, so no tummy tops... (if i owned any) i blame the weather. josephine have been in a writing frenzy. four great new tunes, three of which we debuted at the lemon tree last week and they sound cool. i'm even more excited about the 4th one, which has the best ending we've ever written. misstheoccupier is good too, loads of gigs coming up (as advertised above) and two new tunes, one of which i love the best. mark heard it on sunday when he popped into practice and he thought it was good. so it must be...

Flying Matchstick Men
They say never judge a book by its cover, and likewise never judge a band by its ridiculous name. The Flying Matchstick Men, by default, fall into that category, with a name that sounds like they should be wearing lycra and hanging by the ankles from a high wire. And perhaps they will – with this band, nothing would surprise me
Fronted by Graham ‘Fucking’ Peel, the Matchsticks are an anachronistic mish-mash of glam, disco, Glasgow diy and rock; punked-up Bis, electro-based Roxy; camped-up Pulp, pulped-up camp. The basic ethos is synth-based, with a Mini Korg battling its bigger brother the MS2000, but don’t think that’s all the band is. Glam and rock guitar riffs build the sound, soaring round the inane and often terrifying vocal rants of Peel, ably backed by Becky Manson; live drums and bass add layers to the sound, giving an incredibly catchy and very danceable feel to exciting, brutal music.
Lyrically, Peel falls into the category of disillusioned, betrayed, but ever hopeful, always looking for the next party line, the next big thing he can dismiss for his own genius. “I know all your secrets and I’ve already sold them” go the lyrics to Secrets, and you can’t help feeling Peel wouldn’t hesitate to call the devil itself for a chance at the big time.
On stage they make a curious sight. Peel likes to camp it up, all pink angora and kohl, cravats and military jackets, oh so wrong yet oh so right, whilst Becky remains cool in black, smoking and staying aloof. Peel, on the other hand, likes to talk. A lot. Drummer Mark O’Donnell seems to find it all a little tasteless at times, keeping the set moving with pounding beats, rushing Peel into the next number at break neck speed. And the tunes just keep coming.
Flying Matchstick Men were born in the late 1990s when Peel was a schoolboy in Greenock, conducting the Greenock Youth Orchestra on some nights, hosting karaoke nights as ’Shirley’ on others. The first full length release came in 2003, an eclectic album called The Sleepin*g Songztq, so ahead of itself it was remixed by grnr before even being released on Too Many Fireworks Records (it seems Peel can’t wait). The album boasts titles such as Ghost Stories Plaza, Hunting Doves (apparently not about hunting doves) and features the sound of robots having nightmares. Or so I’m told. The album was recorded almost entirely electronically and is a pounding, unrelenting assault until it becomes as gentle and unassuming as any country ballad, and as poignant a confession as Peel could make: “I’ve noticed you have changed your self-styled image/ why do you cry?” he asks, though one feels it’s more to himself than his imagined persona.
And perhaps that’s part of what makes the Matchsticks so appealing. Whilst some bands have an image, and some frontmen act their chosen persona, Peel is his own image, he lives the part day to day, and this in turn makes his stage presence all the more impressive, and all the more intense. Gigs usually end up with the loudest synth this side of the Clyde struggling through screamed ‘harmonies’ from every member of the band, insanity riding on the hypnotic quality of Peel’s lyrics and complete stage appeal.
What’s next? The new album is being recorded as we speak, and a tour to Sweden is fast approaching, the Matchsticks taking every success in their stride, smoking another cigarette and looking coolly nonchalant.
